Naturally unnatural

I have always been an advocate of allowing people express themselves. After all, everyone is entitled to their opinions however stupid they seem. On the other hand, no one is entitled to attack my person for expressing my opinions…yes, everyone is welcome to disagree with an opinion but certainly not crucify the person expressing such opinions.

Had an intellectual discussion with my friend the other day (no, we do not call them arguments). It was about African women applying relaxers/chemicals to their hair to make it straight et al. (I’d like to say black women but I’ve been told its politically incorrect).

As you can guess, my darling friend is an advocate for all things natural and she is very passionate about it. I even suspect she is planning on starting the emancipation of natural women…and being their president (she’ll definitely punish me for this jibe).

I, on the other hand, am an advocate of what works for anyone. I mean, I admire the fact that you can leave ur curls and natural hair but do not berate me if I decide that I can’t deal with combing my very tough natural hair daily and prefer relaxing/ straightening it…or simply wearing a weave. I wish I had the courage to sport dreadlocks but its really not my style…I’m content to admire it on others.

When I pointed to her that braiding her hair (with attachments) defeats the purpose of being all natural, she proceeded to educate me. Its the true African sister look and the attachments are mere enhancements. That’s where I jumped in and said my weaves are an enhancement of my straightened hair. As you can guess, the discussion got quite messy after that.

I think it is below the belt for anyone to suggest that its because I think caucasians are superior and I am succumbing to my inferiority complex. Really??? I almost fainted when I heard that.

Anyways, I’m not here to argue or anything. I’m just saying let’s not get all so territorial about what being natural is. Like I said to her, the only thing that is truly natural is if we all decide to use hair oil straight from the trees, no shaving of legs (because shaving creams have chemicals in them), no nail varnish, using chewing sticks instead of toothbrush/toothpaste and no use of deodrant or perfumes…then I would agree with anyone trying to preach ‘naturality’ to me.

In other news, I now have a dog stalking me. Sigh, I know I said I wanted to be a celebrity but I did not envisage being stalked by a dog o. First it was cats, now dogs. Perhaps this is a sign that I should be an animal rights advocate?

Have a fabulous day people!
